SPRING and SUMMER EVENTS 2006Everyone is very welcome to attend any or all of the sessions below. Accompanied children are welcome. Any equipment required will be provided. All activities are free of charge.
FOR ALL CONSERVATION DAYS, no previous experience is needed, just come along and have a go after we’ve shown you what to do. The conservation activities are suitable for adults and children of all ages and abilities. Meet in the car park at the Black Mill, Hessle Foreshore (OS grid ref. TA 022 254. click here for map). We finish by 1pm, but you can stay for as long or as little as you wish.
Sunday 9th April 2006 at 10am BUDDLEIA CUTTING It’s important to cut the beautiful buddleia bushes down to size every few years so they remain at their peak for the butterflies to use in the summer. Come along today and lend a hand. Click here to see how the Buddleia Cutting went!
Wednesday 31st May at 8.45pm Wildlife Conservation in the Ponds Enjoy a spring evening on the reserve and help to record the wildlife. Lend a hand counting the newts in the ponds. All you need is a torch and the ability to count over 10! Learn how to use a bat detector and watch bats feeding over the ponds after sunset.
Wednesday 14th June at 7pm Wild Flower Conservation The rosebay willow herb needs pulling out of one of the important wild flower clearings in the woods. Lend a hand this evening to make sure the clearing looks as good as last year.
Wednesday 12th July at 7pm Orchid Count See the benefit of looking after the woodland clearings by relaxing amongst the flowers and counting the orchids that flourish here. What a great way to spend a summer evening! 1115 orchid flowers counted!
Sunday 13th August at 10am Butterfly Conservation Today is the first cutting and raking of the wild flower verges and woodland glades now that the seeds have set. We can also check out the buddleia bushes for butterflies to build up the reserve’s wildlife records. Cancelled unfortunately due to torrential rain.
Sunday 10th September at 10am Pond Conservation Lend a hand clearing out one of the ponds on the reserve to make sure it remains a good home for wildlife. Please bring wellies with you if you have a pair. Himalayan Balsam - THE INVADER
