WHAT IS PHOENIX?

The East Riding Phoenix Group is a conservation group for young people aged 12-19 run by East Riding of Yorkshire Council’s Countryside Access Team and affiliated to the RSPB.

Phoenix members come from around East Yorkshire and Hull and from a range of different backgrounds. They volunteer together on a variety of conservation projects, meeting about once a month to take on tasks including habitat management, environmental arts, wildlife surveys and public events.

The group’s leaders work with the members to arrange projects both on East Riding of Yorkshire Council’s Local Nature Reserves and sites run by other organisations such as the RSPB and Yorkshire Wildlife Trust. The group has volunteered around the area – for example at the Humber Bridge Country Park Local Nature Reserve, Eastrington Ponds Local Nature Reserve, Spurn National Nature reserve, Blacktoft Sands  RSPB Nature Reserve and Flamborough Headland.

In 2002 the group created the Phoenix Sculpture Trail at the Country Park, which consists of 10 unique sculptural seats set around the woods and meadows of the reserve.  The sculptures are inspired by the special heritage of the reserve, and are made from different materials including locally sourced wood, stone, earth and even steel.

Phoenix members also really get away from it all about once a year on residentials to places such as the Lake District and North York Moors.

So if you, or somebody you know, is interested in taking part in conservation activities close to where you live, grab hold of this opportunity and come along to one of our next conservation days. Members can also come along to Phoenix as part of the Duke of Edinburgh Award or the Millennium Volunteers Project.
